#7: Simple Little Things – Underrated Works from Broadway’s Best

There are few better moments for theatre people than discovering our favorite songwriting team has written more than just that one hit show we love (looking at you, Lin-Manuel Miranda).

In today’s episode, Sally and Ashley discuss when they have experienced such moments with Lin himself, Andrew Lippa, and Tom Jones/Harvey Schmidt of The Fantasticks. Join us for an Audra McDonald fangirl sesh as we deep dive into Jones and Schmidt’s lesser-known but awesome 110 in the Shade.

Addendums

I drew a blank on every Andrew Lippa show during this episode, but he has significantly written the music for Shrek the musical and Big Fish.

I made a snide remark about Robert Goulet’s performance of “Try to Remember” from The Fantasticks, but honestly upon listening to it this week, my main issue with it is that he throws the timing out the window and slows it way down. I don’t prefer that.

Stephen Sondheim did, indeed, win the only Tony Award for Best Lyrics ever given, and it was for Company at the 1971 awards (not A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum as I incorrectly postulated).

At the time we recorded this, The Prom’s first cast photo had just been released, and now you can check out the trailer! Honestly when I saw the world premiere it was a HOT mess, but see what you think.

Etiquette corner

Don’t use your phone in the theare, and definitely don’t ask the person next to you history facts while doing so because they might know nothing about history but confidently give you an answer to make you shut up. Theoretically.
